SOT Shops
STATE-OF-THE-ART. FOR THE ARTS.
The School of Theatre shops at Boston University allows our students to work in real-world high-tech laboratory spaces, allowing them to envision their future work in design, production, and management after graduating.

Scene Shop
BU School of Theatre design, production, and management students have access to a 3,880-square-foot Scene Shop where they demonstrate an ability to enrich creative storytelling by building worlds for the stage.

Costume Shop
BU’s Costume Shop offers a space for costume design and production students to take courses and dive into their talents. Students also utilize a separate craft and dye space, plus a costume stock room filled with 10,000+ costume pieces.
Lighting Shop
BU’s state-of-the-art Lighting Shop provides lighting design students with the opportunity to work collaboratively, from planning to experimenting with ways that lighting can drive the narrative, transforming a stage into a different world.
Prop Shop
BU School of Theatre design, production, and management students have a well-equipped Prop Shop with both a construction space as well as a soft goods sewing room. These spaces are where students learn the dynamic craft of theatrical properties, an essential component in bringing stories to life on the stage.

Paint Shop
BU’s Paint Shop, adjacent to the School of Theatre’s Scene Shop, is a 3,300 square-foot space where students apply surface treatments to scenic materials. The 24-foot high moveable air-walls make it easy to transport sets throughout the shops and into BU’s Joan & Edgar Booth Theatre.

Sound Shop
BU’s Sound Shop serves to support classes and productions with all the equipment needed to realize their designs. It houses the entire inventory of the Sound Department and has space for teaching production classes, testing and repair benches, and a production prep area.

Projections/Media
The Projections Department is located within the Lighting Shop in Booth Theatre, serving to support classes and productions with projectors, Qlab, Watchout, and Izadora computers. Projections is a growing design aspect to many shows here on campus and in the broader world.
