MFA graduates from BU School of Visual Arts’ Painting and Sculpture programs represent what they learned at SVA along with the pathways they forged as working artists.
A forum for dialogue. Group critique, or “Group Crit” is a cornerstone of the graduate school student experience. It’s a moment for students to step out from under the perspectives of faculty and share and hear their own ideas with their cohort. The “Group Crit” allows for an exchange of criticism and comments that are profound and profane, acute and empty, snarky and barbed, playful and deeply serious. It is a place for emerging artists to come together and expose themselves, to learn to articulate themselves in relation to their work and the work of others, and to recognize that one’s individual ideas, while valid, are not necessarily universally held.
Group Crit: MFA Painting and Sculpture 1969 – 2024 exhibits over 50 Boston University School of Visual Arts alumni who are visually, materially, and conceptually articulating themselves in conversation with each other. The exhibition, like a good group crit, is a cross-generational discourse on form and ideas. The work at times agrees with each other and at other times agrees to disagree. Group Crit celebrates these varied perspectives and creates a space for them to be appreciated together.
