How to add your SSN to your Student Record
You can add your Social Security Number (SSN) directly to your Student Record. However, it is not possible to edit an existing SSN in MyBU Student. To edit a SSN, please visit First Point or send a secure email, see instructions further below.
To add your SSN yourself:
- Log in to MyBU Student.
- From the left-side menu, select My Profile, and then General Information.
- Click Specify on the corresponding row to input your SSN accordingly.
- Input the number (no need to include any dashes) and click Save. Be sure to double check before saving, you can only specify your SSN once!
To submit in person, you should go to the FirstPoint counter at 881 Commonwealth Ave, 2nd floor with your Social Security Number card and BU ID.
To submit electronically, you must send a secure email with the subject “SSN Submission.” Please use your BU email. The email message must include full Social Security Number and BU ID.
International Students
If you are an international student and do not have a Social Security Number (SSN), you will need to apply for a Social Security Card regardless of the type of stipend you have.
- Please inform your department that you need a SSN so that they can complete the required “Certification of On-Campus Employment form for Boston University” on department letterhead and give it to you.
- For fall semester non-service fellows (ex: dean’s fellows, trainee fellows), your department will list themselves as the “Employer,” “Research” as the “Nature of student’s employment,“ a fall semester start date, and 20 as the “Number of hours per week.”
- Please forward the SSN Certification Form to your Graduate International Student Advisor at the University’s International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO). They will endorse the form. ISSO also offers walk-ins.
- You must then locate your nearest Social Security Administration (SSA) office by using the SSA’s Local Office Search. You will then need to complete a SSA Application for a SSN (SS-5). It is strongly recommended that international students apply at the Boston office at 10 Causeway Street. Present the Social Security number application in person at a Social Security Administration Office, along with documentation of age and identity. Have your Certification of On-Campus Employment letter (endorsed by ISSO), as well as immigration documents (passport, I-94, and I-20 or DS-2019). Use the Social Security Administration’s Evidence Requirements form to make sure you have all the documents you need. Additional information can be found on the ISSO website.
- Once you receive your Social Security Number (SSN), please report it to the University’s Student Employment Office (SEO) with your physical card and BU ID card in-person OR submit electronically through a secure email. Any government identification should not be shared through regular email or phone.
