GRS teaching fellows, research fellows, or non-service training fellows who are interested in pursuing an external internship opportunity must notify the GRS Financial Aid Office at grsaid@bu.edu (copying the department administrator and advisor) at least thirty days prior to the start of the semester in which the internship will take place.
Deadline to submit an internship request/notification:
- April 15 for the summer semester
- July 15 for the fall semester
- November 15 for the spring semester
The student must attach a letter from the internship place confirming:
- the start and end dates
- average hours of work per week
- location (city, state, country)
- total compensation for the period
The GRS Financial Aid Office will review the request and confirm if and how it will affect the student’s University fellowship. Please note that Boston University semesterly employment start and end dates are not flexible. If the internship starts before the current employment period ends, or extends into a future semester, it will affect the student’s University fellowship funding in both semesters. For the start and end dates, please refer to our Stipend FAQs (“When will my service stipend be paid?”).
All graduate fellows are expected to be present for the entirety of the standard semesterly employment period to complete course or lab preparation or wrap-up activities such as updating course or lab materials, refreshing content, or course or lab assessment activities, etc. for 20 hours per week, as scheduled.
