Gabe Calistro is a junior undergraduate student who has been working with Sal Genovese, a CGS lecturer of natural sciences and mathematics, to investigate the potentially devastating effects of microplastics, plastic fragments from water bottles, clothing, and car tires, in the coastal waters of Massachusetts. With the support of the Social Impact Research Fund, Gabe is conducting his independent research project by collecting silt samples from estuaries, mudflats, rivers, and salt marshes to record the density of the tiny bits of plastic in areas of northern and southern Boston.
When asked about his plans for the future, Gabe has a “goal to find a career that allows him to combine his majors in biology and international relations, creating environment policies based on research”.
He states, “I do want to go to grad school, and I have this experience that very few people can say they do. It’s extremely amazing and all through the opportunity of a donor providing the funding to do this.”
