Katya Ravid, DSc, founding director of the Boston University Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Office and the Evans Center for Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research, has been named a fellow and new president of the Massachusetts Academy of Sciences (MAS).
Ravid, a professor of medicine and biochemistry at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and professor of biology at Boston University, received this honor in recognition of her distinguished record of scientific achievements.
Ravid also is an investigator at BU’s Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute, where her research focuses on blood stem cells, cardiovascular biology and cell cycle control. Her major research interests include platelet production and function, and the roles of purine receptors in platelet and vascular biology in health and pathology.
Trained in engineering at the Technion (Israel) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Ravid is an established investigator with the American Heart Association and has served on editorial and advisory boards of the American Society of Hematology and Purines Scientific Committees. She has chaired local and national conferences, such as the Gordon Research Conference on cell biology of megakaryocytes and platelets and is the recipient of several awards in recognition of research and teaching, including BUSM’s Educator of the Year Award in Graduate Medical Sciences, the Sidney University Professorship Award, the Weizmann Institute Rosi and Max Varon Professorship Award and the Fulbright Scholar Award. Ravid is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Most recently Ravid participated in the Lee and Nile Albright Annual Symposium at the Boston Museum of Science on the value of team science in precision medicine.
MAS’s mission is to promote public understanding and appreciation of the sciences, to support scientific research and education in areas relevant to the needs of the state, and to provide consultative or advisory services on matters of science to the Governor, and to local, state, and federal agencies.
