Sex/Gender Identity – BU Data Glossary Entry

The following three question format is the approved data collection text for sex or gender identifiers.  This is an expansion of the Federally-approved data collection, intended to provide respondents with the ability to better represent their personal identity.

1. Legal Sex 

• Male 
• Female 
• X    (the ideal of capturing a third sex designation is heavily dependent on external norms and legal requirements and may not be possible in the near-term, however this is the objective when it becomes possible)
  

2. Gender Identity 

What is your gender identity? 

• Woman 
• Man 
• Nonbinary 
• Not listed here [write-in box] 
• Prefer not to say 

Do you identify as transgender? 

• Yes 
• No 
• Prefer not to say 

 3. Would you like the University to communicate with you on topics that may be of interest to you based on your gender identity?
