Yan Hu (’19)
Yan Hu is a double-bass musician, stage manager, artist broker, youth concert promoter and a sociologist concentrating on cultural policy and public affairs. He is born in a musician family in Beijing, China. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Scotland, UK, concentrating on crisis management research in arts organizations. He earned his master’s degree in Arts Administration with a focus on performing arts, at Boston University. He graduated from the Arts Management program in Central Conservatory of Music (Best conservatory in China).
As a double-bass musician he performed at the Haus des Wiener Musikvereins in Vienna, Austria in 2011, Palace of Nations in Geneva, Switzerland in 2012, and mostly in Beijing. As a youth concert promoter, he organized 23 classical music concerts (half were Chinese Classical Music concerts), the Beijing Daily praised him as “a youth concert promoter with patriotism”. As a sociologist, his paper “How classical music attracts more young audiences – Research of two classical orchestras in Boston, MA” was published in 2018 on the School Education Research (276-277).
At his college years, he has done a lot of research on helping the classical music industry attract young audiences. After coming to Boston, his research turned to focus on how cultural policies influence the development of regional art organizations and the relationship between art organizations and the government.
The Arts Administration profession is the result of modernity and one of the driving forces of modernity. The modernity of human beings and culture is unified with the logical reflection and synergy of material modernity. The BU Arts Administration program is a powerful driving force for the human world to move toward a cultural society.
