Job: Passim Marketing Manager
Passim (www.passim.org) is looking for a highly motivated and creative Marketing Manager to join its team and lead growth efforts for all of the programs and initiatives that fall under our nonprofit’s umbrella, including Club Passim and Passim School of Music. The position is full-time and reports to the Executive Director. The Marketing Manager must have a strong background in membership marketing, database management, and digital/online marketing, including website, email, and social media communications, plus marketing results analytics. You will also assist with many of the development, i.e., fundraising functions within the organization.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Passim Communications
- Responsible for the organization’s messaging and brand integrity/consistency, ensuring all internal and external marketing and communications activities speak with one consistent voice in order to clarify, promote, and increase awareness of Passim’s mission – for both internal and external audiences.
- Oversee approval and creation of all communications and advertising, including print, digital, and social media.
- Drive club revenue via targeted campaigns promoting both in-person live music shows and events and livestreamed shows and events.
- To best serve the needs of our members and meet revenue goals, track open/click-thru rates of emails and social media posts and work toward optimizing content nature, messaging and click-thru rates.
- Serve as point person with our public relations agency; actively engage and cultivate press relationships that ensure coverage of Passim programs, special events, and public announcements.
- Work with Passim Curator of Music and Culture to ensure communications are consistent with our DEIB goals and strategic vision.
- Understand the in-club experience for members and donors to support developing compelling, effective marketing and communications activities. Regularly attend Passim shows and events.
- Organize and run monthly marketing meeting with PR firm and staff. Attend Passim Board Marketing Committee meetings. Attend monthly marketing meetings with external paid search/organic search SEO consultant.
- Serve as liaison with SEO consultant by proactively notifying consultant of new upcoming initiatives for which Passim wants to rank well in Google search results, as a result of effectively employing Google Ads Grant (paid search) and organic search tactics.
- Correspond with press and artists/artist management regarding promoting upcoming performances.
- Track, analyze, and report on ticket sales using Salesforce tool and be proactive about making recommendations to support ticket sales of events for which ticket sales are weak.
- Support planning and rollout of special internal and external events with Executive Director.
- Create, edit and send member surveys. Collect and analyze results to help inform current and future marketing efforts.
Website & Social Media
- Manage website content; determine and report on key benchmarks using Google Analytics (GA4 Analytics) and other available digital analytics and data tools; make recommendations for improvement based on implications of results.
- Support SEO on Google by ensuring non-current content is removed on a timely basis and that content for new events and initiatives is added on a timely basis.
- Serve as liaison with external web developer for any significant/sizeable revisions or additions to Passim website.
- Manage all Passim social media platform profiles/presences, working in conjunction with appropriate individuals involved with all aspects of the organization; Club Passim, Passim School of Music, The Folk Collective, Outreach Concerts, etc. to ensure programs are being effectively and creatively promoted.
- Manage and maximize Google Ads Nonprofit Ad Grant account to drive traffic to website for Passim events and initiatives, including Club Passim live and livestream music, Passim School of Music, The Folk Collective, Passim’s Live Music Brunch, Passim Festivals, and Passim Series.
Membership
- Be fluent with all marketing technologies: ticketing/customer database (PatronManager/Salesforce) and email marketing (My Emma.) Ensure the organization is using all technologies effectively and efficiently.
- Work closely with Development Manager to set goals for membership acquisition and retention and create plans for reaching them.
- Brainstorm and implement new membership incentives.
Community Outreach/Fundraising/Development
- Collaborate with and support Development Manager on fundraising/donations-related initiatives.
- Help plan and coordinate fundraising events as well as Passim’s fall and spring fund drives.
- Reach out to local community groups to develop cross-promotional opportunities.
- Support cultivation of local sponsors and creation of sponsorship packages.
- Co-manage Passim intern program including interviewing, managing and utilization.
- Assist with analysis of what similar non-profit arts venues are doing related to community outreach and fundraising and how.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Eligible candidates must possess 3-5 years of marketing and communications experience, ideally with a nonprofit arts organization, and covering areas such as membership, marketing, development, digital marketing, social media, public relations, event planning, and donor communications. Experience with fundraising a plus.
Individuals must have a passion for staying appraised of new digital marketing tools, tactics, and opportunities, and have ability to learn new or updated digital marketing and digital analytics tool interfaces. Candidates should have a passion for and propensity to analyze marketing, communications and fundraising results to identify opportunities for improvement.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Demonstrated Marketing experience and/or marketing or communications degree.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of database and email marketing.
- Demonstrate a curiosity to learn and stay abreast of ongoing digital marketing tool changes and opportunities.
- Experience using a content management system (such as WordPress) to make simple, day-to-day revisions (additions and revisions) to website.
- Writing and editing experience (externally focused) with a variety of print and online media.
- Fluency in leveraging new media technologies to build and strengthen relationships.
- Accountability; managing and measuring progress, process, and results.
- Team player – ability to work closely with a small staff to achieve great results. Comfortable delegating work.
- Experience with Salesforce or similar CRM system, My Emma or similar email platform, Google Analytics, Google Search Console, various social media platforms, such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Comfortable employing external social media post scheduling tools, such as Buffer or Hootsuite, and post scheduling tools available within various platforms.
- Deadline-oriented and good at managing expectations, e.g., letting manager or co-workers know if a deadline is in jeopardy of being met. Strong internal and external communicator and comfortable with communicating with individuals at all levels of an organization.
- Experience using Canva or other graphic design tools to create branded images for social media use.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
- Compensation commensurate with experience. annual range: $60,000-$65,000.

ABOUT THE ORGANAIZATION:
Passim is a nonprofit arts organization located in the heart of Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA. Our mission is to create an inspiring and interactive music experience for both performers and audiences, to nurture artists at all stages of their careers, and to build a vibrant music community. We have a budget of $1.8M and employ seven full-time and part-time staff, twenty plus hourly club and kitchen staff as well as several consultants and independent contractors.
Established as Club 47 in 1958 and incorporated as a nonprofit in 1994, Passim has been a cornerstone of the arts community in New England, fostering both performers and audiences alike. Joan Baez and Bob Dylan received their start here, along with a host of others, including Tom Rush, Taj Mahal, Al Koper, Peter Wolf, Patty Larkin, Bill Staines, Ellis Paul, and Suzanne Vega, to name but a few. Our Club has received numerous awards and recognitions, including Top 40 Live Music Venues in the United States (Paste Magazine), Best Small Folk Venue in the United States (International Folk Alliance, 2007) and Best Live Music Bar in Boston (Boston Globe, 2011).
Passim’s programs include:
- Club Passim, an all-ages listening venue with live music 7 nights per week.
- The Passim School of Music, a music school for adults that offers classes and workshops in a variety of genres and instruments, including guitar, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica, and voice.
- The Iguana Music Fund, which provides seed grants to aspiring musicians to enhance their careers or aid their community outreach efforts. In 2022, 25 artists received a total of more than $40,000 in grants.
- BCMFest, which showcases Greater Boston performers of music, song and dance from the Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton and other Celtic traditions.
- Four free summer concert series in various locations in Cambridge.
