Minor in Event Management & Public Relations

The School of Hospitality Administration offers an interdisciplinary Minor in Event Management & Public Relations, consisting of 20 units, available to all BU undergraduate students.

Learning Outcomes

• Understand how the Public Relations function is critical to the success of any organization.
• Develop knowledge of the variety of organizational problems public relations are engaged to solve, the challenges they face, and, in part, the solutions they craft to achieve desired outcomes.
• Evaluate the fundamental principles and theory of events management and public relations.
• Develop essential skills in events management and public relations, including communications, planning, stakeholder management, budgeting, evaluation, and crisis management.
• Learn and apply best practices for event planning with an emphasis on sustainability.

Requirements

All Minor in Event Management & Public Relations students must complete the following courses (20 units):

Required Courses

• SHA HF 100 Introduction to Hospitality (4 units) OR SHA HF 150 Introduction to Experience Management (4 units)
• SHA HF 375 Meetings & Conventions (4 units)
• COM CM 215 Principles & Practices of Public Relations (4 units)

Electives

Select 4 units of Hospitality electives from the following list:

• SHA HF 220 Food + Beverage Management (4 units)
• SHA HF 260 Introduction to Hospitality Marketing (4 units)
• SHA HF 295 Private Club Management (2 units)
• SHA HF 360 Hospitality Sales Management (2 units)
• SHA HF 361 Advanced Consumer Behavior in Hospitality (4 units)
• SHA HF 368 Digital Marketing Strategies (4 units)
• SHA HF 376 Special Event Planning and Operations (4 units)

Select 4 units of Communication electives from the following list:

• COM CM 313 Corporate Communication (4 units)
• COM CM 443 Digital Media and PR (4 units)
• COM CM 522 Crisis Management and Communication (4 units)
• COM CM 525 Public Relations Ethics (4 units)
• COM CM 548 International Public Relations (4 units)

A minimum grade of C– is required in all courses that fulfill the Event Management & Public Relations minor.
