Opportunities in the Office of Technology Development at Boston University
The Office of Technology Development (OTD) supports the research efforts at Boston University and enables the dissemination and implementation of BU technologies to the private sector for development of products that benefit the public. OTD case teams work with physicians, scientists, patent attorneys, and industry contacts to identify and protect the intellectual property arising from the University’s research activities. This process involves evaluating discoveries for intellectual property, market potential, licensing and commercialization rights as well as brokering deals with potential investors. OTD is interested in hiring motivated individuals for paid positions to assist various staff members in the Charles River or Medical Campus offices. Responsibilities will depend on the level of commitment and the participant’s background and prior knowledge.

Exploring Careers in Technology Development
Most research universities, federal labs, and mid-to-large sized companies have some sort of technology transfer or intellectual property management program in place. Technology transfer is a rapidly growing field and all of these institutions are vying for qualified candidates for their growing technology transfer offices. The goal of Boston University’s analyst program is to provide graduate students in management, law, science and engineering with exposure to career alternatives beyond the traditional research path. This experience gives individuals with a technical background the business and intellectual property experience necessary to land an entry level position in technology licensing, patent law or business development. The program also provides business and law students with experience in the field of technology development and commercialization.
