The Core Curriculum attracts students who
value liberal education, intellectual friendship, and close contact
with talented and committed faculty. It integrates the disciplines
of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences to explore
some of the most challenging and profound ideas we face as human
beings. The goal is to discover what the greatest works throughout
the ages have to say to us here, right now—to empower the
mind and to deepen what Confucius calls human-heartedness. Core
students study classics of the Western and Eastern traditions
in small seminars taught by full-time faculty. Core classes emphasize
discussion and the development of critical skills in thinking
and writing, and are complemented by lectures from some of the
University's most outstanding scholars.
