Petra Hundemer-Friedman studied English, German and Spanish at the universities of Trier and Mainz in Germany. She holds an MA in English from California State University, Chico, and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (MA equivalent) in German as a Foreign Language from the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. Before moving to the U.S. in 2000, Petra was an instructor for German as a Foreign Language in the Foreign Language Center at Mainz University. During the same time, she taught German Language and Literature to students from Middlebury College during their junior year abroad at Middlebury’s School of German in Germany. Furthermore, she led workshops on interactive forms of learning, oral communication and the development of reading comprehension skills within the “Andragogik” program at Mainz University, a program dedicated to research on foreign language acquisition by adult learners. In 2020, Petra Hundemer-Friedman joined the German Program at BU as a full-time lecturer after teaching part-time at BU for 6 years. Before becoming a full-time faculty member, she also taught at the Goethe Institut Boston, both as a language instructor and as a certified teacher trainer for the institute’s professional development program DLL (“Deutsch lehren lernen”). In this capacity, she taught online seminars and led regular workshops for German teachers from the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Central America on principles and methods of foreign language instruction. She also taught 3rd grade at the German Saturday School Boston for 15 years and held the position of “head teacher” for classes at the intermediate level.
