Chinese Culture Workshop – Mid-Autumn Festival
On September 9th 2022, Chinese FLTA Yuan-Jung Chan and Chinese Language Program Coordinator Shutan Dong hosted a culture workshop on Mid-Autumn Festival. Also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, it is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture and also celebrated in other countries in East and Southeast Asia.
Chang’e Flying to the Moon (嫦娥奔月) is one of the legends in Chinese mythology associated with the festival. After getting familiar with the story and the origin of the festival, students gathered in small groups to talk about the story in Chinese and everyone did a great job! There were a lot of creative ideas that applied a modern twist to the story. Students also appreciated the diverse traditions of the festival across many Chinese speaking communities.
One of the notable traditions is to carry brightly-lit lanterns. As a way to experience this tradition, students collaborated in groups to make their own lanterns and all did an amazing job! Students brought lanterns home as a souvenir from the Mid-Autumn Festival Culture Workshop.
More than 80 students attended the workshop, including prospective students who are curious to learn about Chinese culture. Everyone enjoyed making lanterns and learning about the festival! Thank you so much everyone for celebrating with us!
