Middle East & South Asia Tea Hour
Students enrolled in a Middle Eastern and/or South Asian language class came together for a unified tea.
In recognizing a new major in Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages & Literatures (MESALL), all students were invited to come meet fellow classmates and faculty members from similar language and literature programs! They had the opportunity to explore all the department, and the new major, has to offer. The new major includes studies across Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi-Urdu, Persian and Turkish.
Watch Danial Shariat (CAS ’20) perform a piece on the santur during the tea hour. The santur is a musical instrument of Persian origins that has been widely used across the Middle East and throughout South Asia as a part of classic tradition. The santur is a stringed instrument struck with mezrabs, lightweight plectrums held by the musician, the term “santur” originally meant “100 strings”.
