Exploring German

This semester, the German program held their monthly Kaffeestunde again. Students come together to enjoy coffee/tea, delicious cookies, and board games, and practice their German skills with one another. In addition, we also invited guests to our meetings in October and November. In October, we invited Study Abroad, as well as a DAAD ambassador, to answer student’s questions about studying abroad in Dresden. And in November, an alumni of the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange joined us to inform our students about this opportunity to spend a year in Germany.

October 22 – This semester we started a new Coffee Talk Lecture Series. On October 22nd, guest speaker Prof. Irene Kacandes from Dartmouth College spoke to us in the beautiful library of the Elie Wiesel Center. The title of her presentation was “Auf der Flucht/On the Run: Refugees, Migrants, Immigrants – and a German Studies Professor”. A good number of students attended and a lively discussion followed the presentation.

December 1 – Senior Lecturer Susanne Werk baked Weihnachtsplätzchen (German Christmas cookies) with the members of the Global House German cluster. The students then brought some of the cookies for everyone to enjoy at our Weihnachtsfeier.

December 3 – we held our Weihnachtsfeier (Christmas Party). Many of our students came together to enjoy typical German Christmas treats, such as Stollen, Lebkuchen (ginger bread) and Weihnachtsplätzchen (Christmas cookies), listen to German Christmas songs and enjoy the festive atmosphere. Together with the Global House German cluster, we also sang some traditional German Christmas songs.
