Overview
Project Title: Can the Eye Be a Window to Study Alzheimer’s Disease?
Project Description: This research project is a collaboration with Dr. Wendy Qiu from the Department of Pharmacology. The goal is to investigate whether the retina—an extension of the central nervous system—can serve as a model to study Alzheimer’s disease. Since the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease is often delayed until symptoms become pronounced, we aim to explore whether retinal degeneration associated with various retinal diseases correlates with Alzheimer’s pathology.
We are currently seeking two undergraduate research interns for the Fall 2025 semester. The selected students will work on cryosectioning of retinal tissue. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in neuroscience, ophthalmology, or neurodegenerative diseases to gain hands-on experience in histological techniques.
Eligibility Requirements:
• Must be a sophomore or junior undergraduate student.
• Must be available to work in-person during the Fall 2025 semester.
• Prior experience is not required, but a willingness to learn and attention to detail are essential.
Application Instructions:
Interested students should submit the following materials to tatfong@bu.edu:
1. A current resume
2. A copy of your Fall 2025 class schedule
