Overview

The HEALER (Higher Education Access, Leadership, and Effectiveness Research) Lab is a multidisciplinary research group at Boston University dedicated to improving access, effectiveness, and student success in higher education. Our projects explore important topics such as student loan debt, motivation and persistence in STEM, sense of belonging, and how policies affect diverse student populations.

Undergraduate researchers in our lab gain practical experience in both quantitative and qualitative research, including data analysis, literature reviews, policy analysis, and conference presentations. We welcome students from all disciplines, such as history, public policy, sociology, education, and related fields, who are interested in data-driven approaches to developing more effective and inclusive higher education systems.

We are looking for students who will be interested in a longer-term role spanning multiple semesters and who are able to work well independently. We ask that students commit to at least two semesters (either as a volunteer or for course credit) for 5–10 hours per week. After the initial semesters, there may be opportunities to transition into a paid position. Students can also apply for UROP funding after completing at least one semester of work in the lab for academic course credit.

Participating in the HEALER Lab offers solid preparation for various career paths, including graduate studies, policy research, nonprofit and community leadership, education administration, and data analysis roles across different sectors.
