Overview

I am looking for research assistants who can help me track the children and grandchildren of former slaves who were interviewed about their lives in the 1930s as part of the Federal Writer’s Projects iconic “Slave Narratives.” The research assistants will help match the individual and their offspring to their census records in the US Census. The broader researcher project attempts to link the conditions that the formerly enslaved individuals faced as children with the economic outcomes of their ancestors one and two generations later. The research question attempts to analyze WEB DuBois’s theories about how the practice of breaking up the families of slaves prior to the Civil War shaped the family structure and economic outcomes of African American families throughout the 20th century.
