Getting Started

New to Research? Here’s How to Get Started at BU

Getting involved in research can be one of the most rewarding parts of your academic experience and we’re here to help you take that first step.

🔍 Step 1: Find a Faculty Mentor

To begin your research journey at BU, you’ll need to connect with a faculty member conducting research in your area of interest. Here’s how:

✉️ Step 2: Contact Potential Mentors

Once you’ve identified faculty whose work aligns with your interests:

  • Make a list of at least 10 faculty members to increase your chances of hearing back.

  • Craft a thoughtful email. Not sure where to start? Check out our UROP Intro Email Template.

  • Follow up if you don’t receive a reply within 1–2 weeks.

🤝 Step 3: Start Working with a Faculty Mentor

Once a faculty member agrees to mentor you, make sure to clarify:

  • Your role in the research project

  • Expected weekly hours and schedule

  • Any required trainings

  • How your research involvement will be structured:

    • Volunteer

    • Research for academic credit

    • Paid position through faculty funding

    • Apply for UROP funding

💡 Volunteer Option

If you’ll be volunteering, you can coordinate your schedule directly with your mentor.
