When we think of Pride Month, the first image that typically comes to mind is the classic rainbow flag. However, many people don’t realize that along with the Rainbow Pride Flag, there are an array of different identifiers that represent the diverse queer community. While many in the LGBTQIA+ community identify with the all-encompassing rainbow flag, each group has its own flag to represent its unique contributions and stories within the community. Here’s a rundown of the different flags and what they represent.

Debbie Bazarsky would prefer that this story wasn’t about her.

Rather, the brand-new director of the equally brand-new LGBTQIA+ Center for Faculty & Staff at Boston University would prefer that it focus on the hard work of her colleagues, the members of the University’s Task Force on LGBTQIA+ Faculty and Staff, who recommended creating a professionally staffed center back in 2019. Or she’d like it to be about the trailblazers who’ve come before her and experienced the discrimination the center hopes to eradicate.

In Honor of Pride Month: a List of Resources and Tips for LGBTQ+ Terriers and Allies

“LGBT Pride Month occurs in the United States to commemorate the Stonewall riots in New York City, which occurred at the end of June 1969. Following the riots, organizers wanted to build on that spirit of resistance. The following year, they organized a march to Central Park, and adopted the theme of “Gay Pride” as a counterpoint to the prevailing attitude of shame. That march down Christopher Street soon expanded to other cities, with many more joining in year over year through the 1970s until Pride became the massive celebration that we know today.” (them.us)
