CrowdStrike, the software Boston University uses for endpoint protection/antivirus had an issue where Windows computers will ‘blue screen’ and not load. CrowdStrike has confirmed this is not a security incident or cyber-attack and only affects Windows computers, Mac and Linux are unaffected.

If computers are still crashing and unable to stay online to receive the Channel File Changes, the following steps can be used to resolve this issue:

From the Windows recovery screen:

  1. Click Advanced Recovery Options
  2. Click Troubleshoot
  3. Click Advanced Options
  4. Click Command Prompt
  5. If you are asked for your BitLocker recovery key, you will need to get this from your local IT desktop support representative or group, or call the Service Desk at 617-353-HELP.
  6. Enter:
    del C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike\C-00000291*.sys
    • Note: If you have more than one drive, you may need to figure out what drive has Windows on it and use that drive letter.
  7. Enter: exit (or close the window)
  8. Click Continue

If you have a system that is affected by the outage and need help, please contact the IT Help Center at ithelp@bu.edu or 617-353-HELP (4357).  BU owned systems are encrypted to protect University data and will need a BitLocker key to make the needed change.
