Child Health Insurance Subsidy
Dependent coverage is available through the SHIP Plus health plan. The University now offers a subsidy for the cost of adding dependent children six years old or under for students who meet all of the following criteria:
- Full-time, funded PhD students (must be union members or PhD students on non-service stipends);
- Students must be in good academic standing and within the five-year funding guarantee;
- Child(ren) six years old or under as of August 2024 for this enrollment cycle (or August of the academic year of enrollment in future years);
- Combined household modified adjusted gross income (adjusted gross income with any true-exempt interest income and certain deductions added back) must be $100,000 or less;
- In two-parent families, each parent must be enrolled in school at least part-time, working full-time, or unemployed, but actively seeking employment outside the home.
Reimbursement
Reimbursement is contingent upon benefit eligibility. Please check your eligibility carefully against the list above before applying or you will be responsible for the full premium listed on the Dependent Care coverage webpage.
Dependent premiums will be charged to your BU student account 7 to 14 business days after you submit your online enrollment. You will be responsible for payment in full of any resulting balance due. Students eligible for the child health insurance subsidy will receive a reimbursement payment on their student account.
Enrollment
Eligible students may visit the Aetna Student Health website to enroll their dependents during open enrollment. Please have your BU student id number ready to complete this process.
