Course of Study

You must complete at least one year of full-time study before beginning your qualifying project and dissertation. Each student’s program is individualized and combines academic work with developmental experiences and original research. The required coursework includes:

• Core courses (24 credits) chosen in consultation with your advisor
• Research design courses (8 credits), including advanced statistics and/or research methods
• A mentored teaching experience: SH 906 (2–4 credits) or another opportunity for the student to gain teaching experience can be arranged.

Cross-Registration Opportunities

The doctoral program gives you the opportunity to take courses—including psychology, linguistics, medicine, engineering, rehabilitation, education, and public health—not only in Sargent College but also at Boston University’s other schools and colleges. The range of topics is enormous, from brain mapping to psycholinguistics to biomedical engineering. For example:

Interested in public health? Choose some classes at the BU School of Public Health, which offers coursework in biostatistics, epidemiology, health policy, maternal & child health, and social & behavioral sciences, among others.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Hearing Research Center are excellent resources for seminars, colleagues, and courses in auditory physiology and behavioral measures of hearing status.

You can also take advantage of classes at other universities in the Boston area by cross-registering at Boston College, Brandeis University, and Tufts University.
