BU Sexual Misconduct Policy

From Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer,
Jason Campbell-Foster, Interim Associate Provost and Dean of Students, and
Jean Estevez, Executive Director of Equal Opportunity

The Massachusetts Campus Sexual Violence Act requires colleges and universities to remind their communities annually of their policies and procedures regarding sexual misconduct. BU’s Sexual Misconduct Policy and accompanying procedures (Procedures for the Resolution of Non-Title IX Sexual Misconduct Complaints Against Faculty, Staff, Affiliates, and Non-Affiliates, Procedures for the Resolution of Non-Title IX Sexual Misconduct Complaints Against Students, Procedures for the Resolution of Title IX Sexual Misconduct Complaints Against Students, Faculty, Staff, Affiliates, and Non-Affiliates) provide information about how Boston University addresses allegations of sexual misconduct, sex discrimination, and gender-based harassment, including information regarding remedies that may be available. These topics are also covered in the mandatory sexual misconduct prevention training required of all students and employees.

BU is Asking for Community Participation

The law in this area has been in flux in the past several years at both the state and federal levels. Most recently, on July 12, 2022, the Department of Education (DOE) published proposed revisions to Title IX in the Federal Register, beginning a 60-day comment period. The University plans to submit comments to DOE within that timeframe and would like that input to be informed by our community’s views. Toward that end, the Equal Opportunity Office and the Dean of Students Office will hold two listening sessions on the dates below to hear your comments, questions, or concerns about the DOE’s proposals:

  • Session 1 – Monday, August 15, 2:30–3:30 pm, Zoom
Please email titleix@bu.edu for the link to access the meeting
  • Session 2 – Wednesday, August 17, 11 am – noon
Equal Opportunity Office, Conference Room 307, 888 Commonwealth Avenue (the front entrance is located across the street from 86 Dummer Street, Brookline)

These sessions are also an opportunity for you to meet Jason Campbell-Foster, interim associate provost and dean of students, Jean Estevez, executive director of equal opportunity, and Jessica Nagle, University Title IX coordinator.

In addition to providing your thoughts during one of the listening sessions, individuals may also comment directly to the Department of Education, or via email at titleix@bu.edu.

Those who wish to provide feedback or concerns directly to the Equal Opportunity Office on this or any other matter, may do so anonymously via an online form.

BU is Committed to Providing an Inclusive, Safe, and Respectful Living, Learning and Working Environment

Every member of our community has a role in preventing, recognizing, and addressing prohibited conduct. All community members are encouraged to report incidents of sexual misconduct by completing an incident report form. Employees not designated as confidential resources are expected to report prohibited conduct to the University’s Title IX coordinator by submitting an incident report form. Please remember that the only way we can make meaningful steps toward ending discrimination and harassment is to report it.

The Equal Opportunity Office responds and manages all reports against employees. The Dean of Students Office, through its Office of Judicial Affairs, responds and manages all reports against students. You can learn more about the University’s reporting options, the effects of each, resources available on or off campus, rights of the parties, and the processes at bu.edu/eoo.

Please join us in making our community as safe as possible by becoming an active and engaged community member. You may contact University Title IX Coordinator Jessica Nagle at titleix@bu.edu with any questions.
