Appointment of Professor Stan Sclaroff as Dean of the Boston University College of Arts & Sciences
From Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer
Last August, following the appointment of Professor Stan Sclaroff as Dean ad interim of the College of Arts & Sciences for the 2018-2019 academic year, we announced and began a national level search to identify the next dean of the College. We have now successfully concluded our search, and after a rigorous process that evaluated many very strong candidates, I am excited to announce the appointment of Stan Sclaroff as Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, effective immediately.
Professor Sclaroff is among our most distinguished faculty leaders and has been a member of the CAS faculty since 1995. He is a past chair of the Department of Computer Science (2007-2013), founder of CAS’s Image and Video Computing Group, and holds an affiliate appointment in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. A globally respected scholar in the areas of computer vision, pattern recognition, and machine learning, Professor Sclaroff is recognized for having developed one of the Internet’s first content-based image retrieval systems, among a host of other field-defining innovations. His research has been supported by major grants from the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research, and he is an elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the International Association for Pattern Recognition. He has published extensively in dozens of premier scholarly journals and this year co-authored a book, Visual Saliency: From Pixel-Level to Object-Level Analysis (Springer). In 2018, he received the Mentor of the Year Award from BU Graduate Women in Science and Engineering.
Professor Sclaroff received his BS in Computer Science and English from Tufts University and his master’s and Ph.D. from the Media Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to his graduate studies, he spent five years as a computer scientist in private industry.
As Dean ad interim, Professor Sclaroff has continued to advance the important efforts of the College, providing strong and consistent leadership. In light of his performance and established reputation, his talent for organization-building and track record of collaborative leadership, and his strong commitment to improving diversity and the climate of inclusion within the College, we believe Professor Sclaroff is the right person to lead CAS to even greater levels of excellence.
Please join President Brown and me in congratulating Dean Sclaroff on his appointment and in wishing him well as he continues in this leadership role. We look forward to working together to continue building on the College of Arts & Sciences’ strong momentum.
I would also like to express gratitude to the members of the Dean Search Advisory Committee for their outstanding work and to give special thanks to the Search Committee Chair, Professor Helen Tager-Flusberg, for her leadership in a successful, collaborative search process.
