Study Abroad & Visiting Students

Study Abroad

BU Law offers students the opportunity to study abroad while pursuing their JD degree. Students wishing to participate in one of BU Law’s study abroad programs will continue to have their financial aid processed by the Law Financial Aid Office. Scholarship aid and federal loans will continue uninterrupted.

The Office of Graduate and International Programs will provide the Law Financial Aid Office with information about the costs for each study abroad program. We will use this information to create a cost of attendance budget for your study abroad program. Please be aware that if the costs associated with your program are lower than a semester at BU, your financial aid will be reduced accordingly.

If you have questions about making adjustments to your cost of attendance to more accurately reflect your actual costs, please contact the Law Financial Aid Office.

Please be aware that the Law Financial Aid Office is unable to advance funds for students who are studying abroad. You must follow the same refund policies that are in effect for all other students.  You should bring sufficient funds to cover your expenses until a refund is available from BU.

Visiting Students

BU Law Students Visiting Other Schools

BU Law students who choose to visit another law school during their program can have their financial aid processed by BU Law and transferred to the school they visit.

Students should follow the following steps once their decision to visit another school is approved:

  • Complete a Consortium Agreement (available from the Law Financial Aid Office)
    • This form is an agreement between BU Law and the “host school” and is a requirement in order to process your financial aid
    • The host school uses this form to provide the cost figures to BU
  • Apply for financial aid through BU Law following the same procedure as if you were attending BU Law
    • Please note that BU Law scholarship aid is not transferred to other schools except through approved BU Law study abroad programs
    • The University charges visiting students an in-abstentia fee (equal to 10% of the full-time tuition charges)
  • Provide your new contact information and the contact information for your school

BU Law will process your financial aid and send a refund to you through the regular direct deposit process.

Students From Other Schools Visiting BU Law

Students who will visit BU Law for a semester or year should follow steps below in order to have their financial aid processed to pay expenses while in attendance at BU Law:

  • Complete a Consortium Agreement (available from your law school)
    • This form is an agreement between BU Law and your “home school” and is a requirement in order to process your financial aid
  • Apply for financial aid through your home school as you normally would
  • Once processed, your financial aid will be sent either to BU or to you directly (different schools have different policies)
  • If your funds are sent to BU and exceed your tuition and fees, you may obtain a refund of the credit on your student account by contacting the Law Financial Aid Office.

Please note that visiting students may experience delays in the processing of their financial aid and should prepare accordingly.
