More about NE GWISE:

NE GWiSE is a 501(c)(3) incorporated non-profit and an alliance between GWiSE groups from universities across New England. We are joining together to support and celebrate women and gender minorities in STEM fields, to increase awareness of the intersectional issues we face, and create change within our community. Our specific goals are to strengthen the connections between member GWiSE groups, provide a community for students of schools without GWiSE groups, and provide programming and resources that no one or two GWiSE group can feasibly accomplish on their own. Graduate students of all genders in the New England area are welcome to become NE GWiSE members and attend our events.

Minds Matter Boston – Community Mentoring

Minds Matter Boston (MMB) is a non-profit that equips highly motivated students from low-income backgrounds with the tools to apply to, enroll in and graduate from college. We are actively recruiting mentors to work with our incoming class of college-bound students, and we’d love to offer this volunteer opportunity to graduate students involved with Graduate Women in Science and Engineering (GWISE).

As a note, a recruitment focus of ours is increasing the number of mentors in the organization who reflect the backgrounds of the students we serve (i.e. Black, Latinx, first-generation college students). View more information at this link.

CuSTEMized

GWISE is proud to collaborate with CuSTEMized, a non-profit organization aimed at engaging, encouraging, and empowering young girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) by providing them with tangible products and educational experiences that foster a positive scientific identity from a young age. CuSTEMized creates personalized storybooks called “My Little Book of Big Dreams” for girls that depict them as central characters in diverse STEM fields. The initiative collaborates with families, teachers, and after-school programs to provide free and subsidized personalized books to young girls. For more information on CuSTEMized, please visit their website.

Journal of Emerging Investigators

The Journal of Emerging Investigators (JEI) is an open-access journal that publishes original research in the biological and physical sciences that is written by middle and high school students.  JEI provides students, under the guidance of a teacher or advisor, the opportunity to submit and gain feedback on original research and to publish their findings in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. JEI is a non-profit organization run and operated by graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and professors across the United States.

JEI is looking for scientist volunteers to review papers written by middle and high school students! Volunteering with JEI is a great way to give back to the future generation of scientists while honing your own reviewing and writing skills, contributing to the editorial and review process, and managing an academic journal. In order to keep providing the publishing experience for our middle and high school authors, they rely entirely on the efforts of scientist volunteers like you. Learn more about volunteering with JEI here. You can volunteer with JEI by filling out this form.
