GWISE Coffee and Conversations: Negotiation

Date and Time: Wednesday, August 20 from 2:30-3:30pm

Location: 110 Cummington Mall, Room 245

RSVP

Join GWISE for the second installment of a new event series, Coffee and Conversations. In this series, we hope to provoke meaningful discussions about issues relevant to women in STEM. In the wildly popular Lean In (read last year in the GWISE Book Club), Sheryl Sandberg examines women’s progress in achieving leadership roles, and, in addition to other advice for young women, urges them to not be afraid to negotiate for what they want. Given that in a survey of professional graduates from Carnegie Mellon, 57% of men attempted to negotiate compared to 7% of women, we might think that inequalities in the workplace stem from a lack of ambition or confidence. However, the situation is not so simple: a recent study has shown that women may be penalized compared to men for initiating negotiations. Check out the articles below, and join us for a discussion on gender and negotiation over coffee, tea, and snacks.

Introducing GWISE Coffee and Conversations: Implicit Bias and Mentoring

Date and Time: Thursday, July 17 from 2:30pm-3:30pm

Location: 110 Cummington Mall, Room 245

RSVP

Join GWISE for a new event series, Coffee and Conversations. In this series, we hope to provoke meaningful discussions about issues relevant to women in STEM. Two years ago, a study in PNAS found that implicit biases affect the way that faculty members rate the resumes of male and female students. More recently, researchers found that whether faculty members respond to students’ requests to meet and discuss research depends on both race and gender. Check out the articles below and join us to discuss implicit bias over coffee, tea, and snacks.

GWISE Book Club: Call for 2014-2015 Book Nominations

Date and Time: DEADLINE: Thursday, August 28

Location: N/A

With the new academic year approaching, it’s time to brainstorm a new reading list for the GWISE Book Club. We want to cover a broad range of topics, and we need your suggestions! In the past, Book Club selections have come from many genres including nonfiction/current events, women’s issues, science/science fiction, classic literature, and general fiction… anything that stirs up a great conversation. If it’s on your reading list, please suggest it!

The Book Club meets approximately every six weeks, and GWISE purchases several copies for borrowing; we’d love to see you there, especially if you’ve never joined us. Please respond with suggestions HERE by Thursday, August 28. If you have more than 3 suggestions, you can fill out additional forms. A poll will follow shortly for choosing this year’s titles. A list of past titles is included in the online form.

Also, just a reminder that the conclusion of the Summer Book Club series will be held on Tuesday, September 9, featuring The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky.
