Halloween Weekend
The following was sent to all students on Friday, October 25, 2024 from Dean Jason Campbell-Foster
Double, double toil and trouble;
Campus brews and kickbacks bubble.
Costumed students fill the streets,
Chasing thrills and midnight treats.
Though the night is full of fun and delight,
Keep your safety in sight,
With your pals by your side,
Enjoy a joyful ride,
Stay safe and keep your spirits bright.
Friends,
True confession: I never liked Halloween. I dressed up as Ernie from Sesame Street when I was five, and I went to my favorite teacher’s house. She scared the daylight out of me, and I never went out trick-or-treating again. It’s a long story, stop by my office and I will tell you sometime. #corememoryunlocked.
Just because I will be sitting inside my house on Halloween doesn’t mean that you will. You deserve a moment to step back from the grind and lean into the fun. While you put the finishing touches on your costumes and head out into the night, keep a few pieces of advice from the Halloween-hatin’ Dean on the top of your mind:
- Look out for each other: stay with your group and make sure you get that text your friend got home safely.
- Don’t take candy (or anything) from strangers. Not everyone is looking out for your best interest.
- Know your limits: if you choose to drink, don’t overindulge. It’s witch-ful thinking that you will handle alcohol consumption differently since it’s Halloween.
- Know who to call: You should always have the BUPD number in your phone (617-353-2121) or call 911 for off campus emergencies. BU has a Good Samaritan Policy, even if you or your friend is under 21, so don’t be afraid to ask for help.
- Leave at home those costumes that appropriate other cultures or identities.
- Remember we live in a neighborhood and not everyone appreciates disruptions.
How ever you choose to celebrate, please make sure you’re looking out for yourself, your friends, and your fellow Terriers.
Stay safe, take care, and have a spooktacular time,
Jason Campbell-Foster, EdD
