About Megan Turchi
Why did you choose the Journalism (MS) program?
I changed career paths many times in my undergraduate years and realized I had too many interests for just one job. I came to the conclusion that doing journalism would be a great opportunity to get to learn about a variety of topics and to meet different people.
How did your time at COM help prepare you for your life post-COM?
I had a staff role with the Boston University News Service, which gave me a very good look at what a real newsroom would look like. In my classes I got such good feedback from esteemed journalists and still remember many things they told me still today while working. I took a wide variety of classes from radio to video to print in order to be well rounded and to know how to tell stories in multiple ways. My internship at Boston.com as a news writer also shaped my journalism education, because I got to take what I was learning and put it to use -- it also got me the job I have now.
What have you been up to since you graduated?
I have been finished with COM for two years now and I have been a staff writer at Boston.com since then. I transitioned from being a news intern to the site's real estate writer.
Can you talk about your current position? How did you choose it? What makes it exciting?
I currently write about real estate for Boston.com. I didn't actually chose it -- I knew nothing about real estate when I started out. But it was so fun to learn a new subject (especially something Bostonians care so much about). I got to learn about not only the real estate market, but also the city of Boston as a whole. People here care about their neighborhoods and I need to make sure that I know them as well in order to tell the best stories I possibly can. I get to feature beautiful and historic homes, while also telling readers important information about how to buy a house and what is happening currently in the market.
What advice would you give to prospective Journalism (MS) students?
Know that it is going to be hard. Jobs are not easy to come by and once you do get one you may need to work long hours -- BUT telling important stories and giving readers vital information is so rewarding and the world needs more good people to do it!
