Description: This is a meaningful opportunity for graduate students interested in working with undergraduate students and supporting their learning. Graduate Teaching Assistants (TAs) will support faculty teaching CO101: The World of Communication. This is an introductory course for all undergraduate and transfer students who will be pursuing a degree at COM. The course covers fundamental concepts related to media science, advertising, PR, journalism, film, and TV, with a focus on application.

The course is taught by faculty and meets in a lecture hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students and TAs attend the lecture, and then TAs support the course by facilitating discussions with their students on Fridays about the content covered by the faculty.  

TA requirements (all requirements are in-person):

  • Attend weekly lecture classes taught by faculty (Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:30 AM – 10:45 AM OR 12:30 PM – 1:45 PM). TAs choose which lecture to attend (9:30 AM or 12:30 PM).
  • Attend a weekly training (every Thursday from 3:30 PM – 5:15 PM) to learn best pedagogical practices and cover the agenda for the Friday discussion section. 
  • Run a weekly Friday discussion section with approximately 25 students. TAs will be assigned either a 9:05 – 9:55 AM section OR a 12:20 – 1:10 section on Fridays. 
  • Hold a weekly office hour (TAs choose which hour this will be).
  • Communicate with students on a regular basis and respond to student questions in a timely manner.
  • Grade students’ work and provide feedback. Final project grading takes place after classes end and concludes when the university final exam period ends.

Stipend: CO101 teaching assistants receive $23.50 per hour in return for approximately 15 hours of work per week. Please note that this appointment is for the fall semester only. Though there is a possibility of renewal for the spring semester, it is not guaranteed and is based on staffing needs.

Orientation: All Teaching Assistants will be required to attend the CO 101 TA Orientation on Thursday, August 27th from 9:00am – 10:30am (ET). Orientation will take place virtually on Zoom.

TA positions are only available to enrolled students. To be eligible for this position, you must also accept your offer of admission to Boston University and pay your $400 deposit.
