This symposium will share the focused research findings on Data and Misinformation in an Era of Sustainability and Climate Change Crises, an initiative that is jointly funded by the Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability with the Rafik B. Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science & Engineering.

The Taking on Climate Lies symposium will take place on the 17th floor of Boston University’s new Center for Computing & Data Sciences building– the greenest building in BU’s history and one of the most sustainable buildings in New England. We anticipate a lively program with fresh research findings from the team, keynote speaker Deputy Climate Chief Jonathan Schrag, lunch, and refreshments. Most of all, we look forward to your discussion and participation as we work to use the findings to create a better future.

The afternoon will feature Michelle Amazeen, Associate Professor, Department of Mass Communication, Advertising and Public Relations, College of Communication, and Chris Wells, Associate Professor, Department of Journalism, Division of Emerging Media Studies, College of Communication, presenting about the deceptive nature of Native Advertising by companies who attempt to misdirect the public about the future climate change. Next, Arunima Krishna, Assistant Professor, Department of Mass Communication, Advertising and Public Relations, College of Communication, will explore how information-susceptible publics react to and absorb misinformation differently based on specific characteristics that define them.

Later, Mariette DiChristina, Dean of the College of Communication; Kenneth R. Lutchen, Dean, College of Engineering; Ioannis Paschalidis, Director, Rafik B. Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science and Engineering; Gloria S. Waters, Vice President and Associate Provost for Research; and Tanya Zlateva, Dean of Metropolitan College & Extended Education, will discuss BU’s leadership on climate solutions, as seen from their respective areas within the University. Moderated by Sarah Finnie Robinson, Senior Fellow, Institute for Global Sustainability
