MFA in Screenwriting Candidate Named Finalist for HUMANITAS College Fellowship
Film and Television

HUMANITAS recently named MFA in Screenwriting graduate, Joe Hemphill, a finalist for the Carol Mendelsohn College Drama Fellowship. After multiple rounds of judging, his script, The Bargeman, was selected for its strong and unique voice. According to Humanitas' Executive Director, Cathleen Young, their purpose is to "recognize, encourage and empower writers who teach us how to embrace our common humanity...These storytellers help us to consider our place in the world, and examine our own moral compasses."
Hemphill's script is a family drama about a bargeman named Aidan Lewry, whose father disappeared during a storm on the Hudson River. Aidan is forced to confront what really happened to his father after the ship's bell washes up in the Erie Canal twenty years later.
"Because of BU, not only am I a finalist for the HUMANITAS College Fellowships, but I also have friends that I will be living with in LA whom I consider to be family in many ways. I have internship leads I'm pursuing at great companies like HBO and Annapurna Pictures thanks to the BU in LA program, and overall am thoroughly prepared for starting my career in the film and television industry."
