LSEB 828 Access Restrictions

Going forward, Guest access to LSEB 828 (the BU-CMD’s 8th floor laboratory space) will be severely limited.

Open access and walkup instruments in LSEB 828 will be divided into two zones: Zone A and Zone B, with restricted access (one user max) to each zone.

  • Zone A instruments:

    • Solvent purification system
    • Glove box
    • Microwaves
    • Photobox
  • Zone B instruments:

    • H2 tank
    • Breeze Chiral HPLC
    • Preparative HPLC
    • GC
    • UPC2 (Porco Lab)
    • Genevacs
    • CMD Sample Submission Freezer
    • CMD Analytical Core Satellite Work area

Access Rules:

  1. Maximum one person per Zone at all times.

    • Example: If someone is using the glove box, access to all other Zone A instruments (solvent system, microwaves, photobox) is off limits until the glove box user has left.

    • The one person limit is also inclusive of BU-CMD lab members using these instruments.

  2. All Zone users, including both BU-CMD lab members and outside Guests, must reserve their access time in the Faces Reservation System.

    • Website: https://faces.ccrc.uga.edu/

    • Group: BU_CMD

    • Username: Your Kerberos ID

    • Password: The website has a password reset feature if you need it

    • Contact Lauren Brown if you need an account setup

    • Calendar Names: 828-ZONE_A and 828-ZONE_B

  3. Reservations are made on a Zone basis, rather than an instrument basis.

    • Users are encouraged to be descriptive in reservations. For example, if you plan to use the Genevac for four hours, the preferred practice would be to reserve two 10-minute slots spaced 4 hours apart, e.g. “Jane – Genevac sample set up” and “Jane – Genevac sample retrieve” – this lets other users easily recognize that the Genevac will be in use over that four hour period, while also making it clear that you will not be physically present in the Zone for the entire time.

    • If there is strong demand for an instrument-based reservation system in addition to the Zone reservations for any instrument please let us know.

  4. Guest entry to LSEB 828 for any reason other than use of the named Zone A and Zone B instruments above is prohibited.

    • All chemical/supply borrowing should occur through our new contactless pickup system.

  5. Reservations can be made in 10-minute increments with no limits on consecutive slots.

  6. Reserve no more time than you need, and cancel your reservation if you end early

  7. Do not linger in lab if your instrument usage does not require your direct attention. Reserve separate slots for dropoff and pickup (if needed).

Safety rules:

  1. Masks are mandatory at all times.

    • Masks will not be provided by BU-CMD, so please bring your own.

  2. Practice social distancing (>6 feet from all other people in the lab) at all times

  3. Traffic in LSEB 828 will be one directional and marked by arrows on the floor.

    • One door (nearest lobby elevators) will be Entry Only, the other (nearest freight elevator) will be Exit Only

  4. Certain areas of the lab will be marked off by tape as restricted to BU-CMD lab members only. Please do not traverse these spaces during your visit.

  5. Wear clean fresh gloves when touching walkup instruments.

    • Gloves will be provided by BU-CMD.

  6. Guests are encouraged to use Kimwipes (provided) to open door handles

  7. Each zone will have at least one disinfectant spray bottle and one roll of paper towels for cleaning. Users are expected to disinfect the instrument area (bench and high touch instrument surfaces) before and after use.

Other Instrument-Specific Rules:

  • Solvent purification system: Any group needing use of the BU-CMD’s solvent purification system should plan to only do so sparingly, and mimimize frequency of visits by doing one bulk solvent pickup per day into dry glassware for your group to share.
  • Microwaves: You may use your Faces reservation in lieu of physically signing the log book, as long as your name and contact information are clearly identifiable in your reservation. For safety reasons, it continues to be very important that we are able to immediately identify and contact you in the event of a vessel breach. If you encounter a non-emergency issue with the instrument, you may email brownle@bu.edu with details instead of recording it in the book.
  • Glove box: There are special cleaning protocols for pre- and post-glove box usage. Contact Paul Marcyk if you plan to use the glove box.
