In addition to the general requirements that all College of Arts and Science students must require, students with a major in Classical Civilization must also complete the following requirements.
A major in classical civilization requires a minimum of ten courses, all with a grade of C or better.
- One course in Greek History or Civilization
- CL101 World of Greece
- CL321 Greek History
- CG101 World of Modern Greece
- One course in Roman History or Civilization
- CL102 World of Rome
- CL322 Roman History
- Five courses in Classical Civilization, Classical Languages and/or Modern Greek (CAS CG courses)

- Two courses in Classical Literature (either in translation or in the original language)

* If CL111, CL112, CL161, CL162, CG111, or CG112 are used toward the language requirement they cannot be used toward major requirements
**CL 101 and CL 102 may be counted towards this requirement as well, unless these courses are used to satisfy the requirement above, namely, one course in either Greek Civilization or History and one course in either Roman Civilization or History
With permission of the Chair or the Director of Undergraduate Studies, up to two related courses from other departments may be counted toward this major. Refer to the list of related courses recommended by the department here under “Related Courses”.
Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate a broad understanding of the history and culture of ancient Greece and Rome.
- Read with comprehension works of ancient Greek and/or Latin poetry and prose, either in the original or in English translation, demonstrating understanding of genre, style, and cultural context.
- Communicate clearly and persuasively, both orally and in writing, ideas about the ancient world and its products.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the influence of classical culture on other historical periods.
