In addition to the general requirements that all College of Arts and Science students must require, students with a major in Ancient Greek must also complete the following requirements.
A major in ancient Greek requires a minimum of nine courses, all with a grade of C or better.
- One course in Greek History or Civilization
- CL101 World of Greece
- CL321 Greek History
- Four courses in Ancient Greek above the 100-level
- Three courses from:
- CL108 Scientific Terminology from Greek and Latin Roots
- CL121 What Is a Good Life? Ancient Wisdom and Modern Insights
- CL202 Warfare in Antiquity
- CL206 Women in Antiquity
- CL207 Sexuality in Ancient Greece and Rome
- CL213 Greek and Roman Mythology
- CL216 Greek and Roman Religion
- CL224 Greek Drama in Translation
- CL237 Race and Ethnicity in Ancient Greece and Rome
- CL249 Classics in Popular Culture
- CL300 The Age of Pericles
- CL310 The Classical Tradition in Modern Literature
- CL313 The “Odyssey” and “Ulysses”
- CL325/CI369 Greek Tragedy and Film
- CL359/CG359 Cavafy and History
- One course at the 400-level or above in Ancient Greek or CL406.
Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate broad understanding of the history and culture of ancient Greece.
- Demonstrate sufficient understanding of the vocabulary, morphology, and syntax of ancient Greek to read standard works of the classical period accurately.
- Acquire the skills necessary to use dictionaries, grammars, and other resources that aid the reading and understanding of or ancient Greek texts.
- Demonstrate, in their reading of ancient Greek, an understanding of genre, style, cultural context, and the place of the text within the literary history of the ancient world.
- Communicate clearly and persuasively, both orally and in writing, ideas about ancient Greek literary texts.
