Hassan Abubakar (he/him) is a second-year Ph.D. student in sociocultural anthropology. He holds a BA and an MA in sociology from Bayero University. His research interests include West African Ajami traditions (the adaptation of Arabic script to West African languages), Islam in West Africa, historical anthropology, and the African diaspora in Arabia. In Spring 2026, Hassan was awarded a summer mini-grant which will support preliminary fieldwork in Mecca, Saudi Arabia for his dissertation project, “From Pilgrims to Migrants: West Africans in Mecca,” which examines how the pilgrimage to Mecca has historically served, and continues to serve, as a pathway to West African migration to the holy city.
