Andrew King conducts community-based research on how the school policing system and “family policing” system criminalize low-income families of color in Massachusetts. He recently received his PhD in Public Policy at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies, where he conducted community-based research on school discipline reform, youth organizing, and the school-to-prison pipeline. He conducted his dissertation research on the New York City Community School Initiative, the largest education improvement plan in the country. Before that he served as project coordinator for a collaborative research project led by Dr. Mark Warren on youth leadership in the Boston Public School student walkout movement.

Drew previously directed and expanded the nationally renowned Participatory Budgeting (PB) initiative in East Harlem/ South Bronx for a high profile NYC Council Member for two years, which gave community residents decision-making power to vote on how a portion of a public budget was spent. The program served as a successful outreach and community engagement mechanism to mobilize disenfranchised communities and served as a model for other districts.
