Korean Scholars and Students from Gachon University Visit CISS

On Tuesday November 11, a group of Korean students from Gachon University – led by Professor Hyejoong Kim (Professor Child & Family Studies) –  visited the Center for Innovation in Social Science. The delegation was in the United States to attend the Gerontological Society of America annual meeting in Boston, and to visit with BU researchers and students with interests in population aging. The visiting students represented multiple academic disciplines including social work, psychology, urban planning, business, and more.

The visit was part of the Humanities-Utmost-Sharing-System (HUSS) Team program at Gachon University, South Korea. The HUSS Team is a government-funded initiative, supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea and the Ministry of Education. It functions as an inter-university consortium focused on addressing pressing social issues, including but not limited to population change, climate crises, and the risk society. Gachon University is a member of the Population Change Consortium, along with four other universities across the country. The consortium trains students to become specialists capable of responding to demographic challenges, such as low fertility, population aging, and migration. Dr. Kim leads this program in liaison with other consortium institutions and oversees the Interdisciplinary Program in Humanities and Sociology.

The team met with CISS director Deborah Carr, postdoctoral fellow Stuti Das, and doctoral candidate Elinore Avni to discuss challenges posed by global population aging, and possible policy solutions.
