CISS to Hold Workshop “Editor’s Confidential: Journal Editors Demystify the Peer-Review Process”
Publishing research in peer-reviewed journals is an essential component of a successful academic career. On Monday February 14 from 3:30-5 pm, a panel of editors of prominent social sciences journals will share insights and advice for how to successfully navigate the peer-review process. The editors will discuss topics including: selecting a target journal, writing a successful manuscript, doing an effective revision, how reviewers are chosen, and the reasons why papers are rejected. The presentation will be followed by audience Q&A.

Panelists are:
Louis Chude-Sokei is in his tenth year as editor-in-chief of The Black Scholar (TBS). He is a professor of English, the George and Joyce Wein Chair In African American Studies, and director of The African American Studies Program. TBS is the first modern Black studies research journal and is currently the leading such journal in the United States. Founded on the premise that Black writers, scholars, activists and artists could participate in dialogue within its pages, TBS‘s primary mission has been to chronicle, analyze, and debate the conditions and the emancipatory efforts of Black people.
Alan B. Cohen is editor-in-chief of The Milbank Quarterly. He is a Research Professor in the Markets, Public Policy and Law Department of Questrom School of Business, and Professor of Health Law, Policy and Management at BU School of Public Health. The Milbank Quarterly is a leading multidisciplinary journal of population health and health policy. It publishes papers that illuminate and add new insights to understanding important policy issues involving health and health care.
Alya Guseva is editor-in-chief of Socio-Economic-Review (SER). She is an associate professor and director of graduate studies in the Sociology department. SER is the flagship journal of Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics (SASE). The journal promotes interdisciplinary dialogue between sociology, economics, political science and moral philosophy, through both empirical and theoretical work.
Kevin Lang is editor-in-chief of Journal of Labor Economics (JOLE). He is the Laurence A. Bloom Professor of Economics. JOLE is the flagship journal of the Society of Labor Economists. The journal publishes international research on issues affecting social and private behavior, and the economy including supply and demand of labor services, personnel economics, distribution of income, unions and collective bargaining, applied and policy issues, and labor markets and demographics.
The session will be moderated by Deborah Carr, who served as editor-in-chief of Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences (2015-20) and deputy editor of Journal of Marriage & Family (2005-08; 2011-14), and Social Psychology Quarterly (2011-13). She is professor of sociology and director of the Center for Innovation in Social Science.
