This opportunity is suitable for individuals who have experience in the foundational competency areas of data science, including basic and/or advanced programming skills, data modeling/visualization, and mathematics and computing to express data analysis (calculus, linear algebra, and probability). The Student Community Ambassador serves as the first point of contact for students, faculty, staff, employers, alumni, and visitors to the Duan Family Center for Computing & Data Sciences. Student ambassadors support the daily operations of the CDS managed spaces in the building while creating a welcoming, organized, and engaging environment across the 2nd (Spark!) & 16th (CDS administration) floors.

This position combines customer service, office operations, event support, technology assistance, and community engagement. Student ambassadors work collaboratively with professional staff to ensure shared spaces are well maintained, meetings and events run smoothly, and visitors have an exceptional experience.

In addition to building-wide responsibilities, Community Ambassadors assigned to the 16th floor complete specialized operational responsibilities unique to this floor.

CDS-Wide Responsibilities (2nd, 5th, 13-16th Floors)

Front Desk & Customer Service

• Serve as a welcoming first point of contact for students, faculty, staff, alumni, employers, and visitors.
• Answer the main office phone and direct inquiries appropriately (16th floor).
• Assist guests in locating offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, study spaces, and campus resources.
• Maintain a professional, friendly, and responsive front desk presence.
• Provide general building information and answer questions.
• Support visitor check-in processes.
• Collect visitor swipe data for Spark! visitors (2nd floor).

Building Operations

Support the daily operation of shared spaces throughout the building by:

• Monitoring conference rooms, kitchens, collaboration spaces, copy rooms, and supply areas.
• Maintaining cleanliness and organization of community and common spaces.
• Resetting furniture and collaboration areas throughout the day.
• Organizing conference rooms following meetings.
• Monitoring printers for paper, toner, and error messages (16th floor).
• Restocking office, kitchen, and meeting supplies.
• Tracking inventory and communicating supply needs.
• Assisting with mail and package distribution.
• Completing assigned opening and closing responsibilities which vary across the CDS floors.
• Coffee station setup, maintenance, and cleaning (16th floor).
• Daily inventory checks of Kitchen ensuring organization and cleanliness (16th floor).

Event & Meeting Support

Provide operational support for meetings and events throughout the building by:

• Assisting with room setup and breakdown.
• Preparing meeting and event spaces.
• Supporting food setup and catering logistics.
• Greeting guests and providing wayfinding assistance.
• Responding to day-of event requests.
• Remaining flexible to meet changing operational priorities.

AV & Technology Support

Develop proficiency with meeting room technology by:

• Performing routine AV functionality checks in conference rooms.
• Testing displays, microphones, cameras, and presentation equipment.
• Learning common adapters and connection methods.
• Providing basic troubleshooting for meeting technology.
• Escalating technical issues when appropriate.

Community Engagement

Help create an engaging and welcoming CDS community by:

• Acting as an ambassador for the Duan Family Center and Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences.
• Creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for all visitors.
• Helping maintain attractive, functional community spaces.
• Participating in student employee meetings and trainings.
• Assisting with student engagement initiatives.
• Helping plan student employee appreciation and community-building activities.
• Identifying opportunities to improve operations, spaces, and the student experience.
• Taking ownership of a small improvement project each semester (e.g., proposing a new process, improving a shared space, or developing a new resource).

Administrative Support

Assist with departmental operations by:

• Supporting inventory management.
• Maintaining supply lists.
• Providing building access support (keys and access requests).
• Assisting with data entry and documentation.
• Completing special projects as assigned.
• Cross-training to support operational needs across the department.
