BU Students Participate in Data Days for Good MassMutual Mentorship Program
The Data Days for Good 2023 initiative is a four-day community impact and mentorship event held at MassMutual's Boston campus from June 26-29. Here MassMutual data scientists, engineers, analysts, project managers and more, drop their regular work and engage full-time in a focused sprint to make a difference in the community.
More than twenty Boston University students—data science, computer science, engineering majors, and more—worked alongside their MassMutual mentors to identify ways to better serve the community.
Data Days for Good is a partnership between BU Computing & Data Sciences, BU Spark! and MassMutual. Learn about the Summer 2023 project lineup, view the list of BU student mentees and MassMutual mentors, and view the program photo gallery.

Project: Voting Patterns in Boston
City Councilor Julia Mejia ran for office for the first time in 2019 and won her election, following a recount by 1 vote. She ran on the promise of expanding civic engagement and participation among the communities historically excluded by elections and government.
At-large Boston City Councilor Julia Mejia seeks to learn more about historical trends in voter registration and turnout amongst the Latine/LatinX community.
Community Partner: City Councilor At-Large Julia Mejia. Councilor Mejia is currently the Chair of the Committee on Education, the Chair of the Committee on Government Accountability, Transparency, and Accessibility as well as the Chair of the Committee on Labor, Workforce, and Economic Development.
Project: Juvenile Justice in Mass
Citizens for Juvenile Justice (CfJJ) was founded in 1994 as the only independent, non-profit, statewide organization working exclusively to reform and reimagine the juvenile justice and other youth serving systems in Massachusetts.
CFJJ is interested in understanding patterns and linkages between school discipline data, federal adoption and foster care data, and school arrests in Massachusetts. They are specifically interested in understanding the relationships between geography, disability status, race and ethnicity, and age/grade levels.
Project: Computer Science Literacy in Massachusetts
The New Commonwealth Fund seeks to disrupt and reform harmful, colonialistic power structures that have created generational economic and social inequities for Black, Latino, and indigenous peoples. NCF is interested in better understanding the education divide across Massachusetts school districts regarding computer science education and AP test taking for Black, Latino and indigenous peoples.
