Caregiver Interview Study

The Caregiver Interview Study is now closed for recruitment. We learned so much from our participants (thank you!) and are now excitedly working on analyzing our data. Stay tuned for our results!

Why did CARE conduct this study?

We know that individuals with ASD are often sensitive to things in their environment, like noises, lights, or textures. We also know that caregivers of individuals of ASD sometimes express concerns about their children’s transition to adulthood. However, not much is known about how these two topics intersect! Do the sensory sensitivities of individuals with ASD impact their transition to adulthood? How so? Do they not have an impact? What other factors influence this transition in relation to sensory sensitivities? These are some of the questions were trying to answer!

Who participated?

The interview study sought out caregivers of young adults with ASD! More specifically, we enrolled caregivers who:

  • Had a child with an ASD diagnosis
  • Had a child who was between 16 and 25 years old
  • Had a child who had sensory sensitivities and interests
  • Had a child who lived at home
  • Were comfortable speaking English

What did the study involve?

  • 2-3 hours total
  • Several online surveys
  • An online interview

More specifically, if participants were eligible for our study, we scheduled a brief (about 30 minutes) video call to enroll participants into our study where they were able to ask questions and tell us how we could or could not use their data. We then sent participants several online surveys to complete (about 1-1.5 hours). Once those online surveys were completed, we scheduled a Zoom call where we asked participants questions about how their child’s sensory sensitivities impacted (or didn’t impact!) their transition to adulthood.
