Erik Holmgren

Erik Holmgren serves as the Program Manager for Creative Youth Development and Education at the Massachusetts Cultural Council where he oversees funding for in-school and out of school time programs along with the agency’s groundbreaking work in social prescription. Prior to his work at the Council, Dr. Holmgren was a concert saxophonist, performing with a diverse group of organizations from the United States Military Academy Band at West Point to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.  He has been on faculty at Frostburg State University and Columbia University, in addition to being a guest lecturer at more than a half dozen other institutions.  His writing has been published in Symphony Magazine, Bass World, The Saxophone Symposium, WorldBlu Magazine, the Journal of Research in Music Performance and most recently, in Youth Development as Music Learning, a new book published by Routledge. He holds five degrees in music and education and is the founder of Musical Perspectives, one of the first online journals focusing on scholarship in music performance.
