Practicum

Students adding a concentration to the MS in Arts and Cultural Management are required to demonstrate their competence by completing the capstone requirement. This is achieved through the addition of MET AR 795 Arts and Cultural Management Practicum or MET AR 796 Advanced Management Consulting for Arts and Cultural Organizations to their curriculum. The capstone requirement supports students in connecting their experience and their prior graduate coursework to their personal and professional goals at an advanced level.

The requirements of MET AR 795 can be satisfied by undertaking an internship with a cultural organization, or through the realization of a concrete project undertaken individually or or with a cultural organization or producer. The practicum experience combines experiential learning and fieldwork with analysis, reflection, and related research. Projects must be proposed and approved prior to enrolling in the practicum course. Students are required to complete approximately 200 hours of work in either an internship or a project. The practicum course is based on an educational model, where the students are provided with support and resources to secure their own placements for internships and projects to ensure long-term professional success.

MET AR 796 is a semester-long consulting project which partners teams of students with local arts organizations. The purpose of this course is to increase students’ ability to analyze and solve problems that confront arts organizations. Permission from the instructor is required to enroll.
