Practicum

Students adding a concentration to the MS in Arts and Cultural Management are required to demonstrate their competence through direct work experience in the sector or a practical project in collaboration with  cultural organizations or producers. This is achieved through the addition of MET AR 795 Arts and Cultural Management Practicum or MET AR 796 Advanced Management Consulting for Arts and Cultural Organizations to their curriculum.

The practicum course is a capstone experience in the graduate program. It supports students in connecting their experience to their prior graduate coursework and to their personal and professional goals at an advanced level. The requirements of MET AR 795 can be satisfied by undertaking  an internship with a cultural organization, or through the realization of a concrete project undertaken individually or through collaboration with a cultural organization. The practicum experience combines experiential learning and fieldwork with analysis, reflection, and related research. Projects must be proposed and approved prior to enrolling in the practicum. Students are required to complete a total of approximately 200 hours of work in either an internship or a project. This can be accomplished in a single term by taking the practicum as a 4-unit course, or over the course of two terms by taking the practicum as a 2-unit course in each term.

The practicum course is based on an educational model, where the students are provided with support and resources to secure their own placements for internships and projects to ensure long-term professional success.
