Vanessa Woo (’18) is currently the Director of Communications for Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn. Prior to coming to Boston, she graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) with a BSc in International Relations. Having worked in various arts nonprofits and the City of Boston, she is interested in developing community connections and partnerships between local art organizations and other agencies.

Woo has experience working in both visual and performing arts. She has interned at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the art magazine ArtAsiaPacific. Vanessa spent two years working in the Marketing Department for the Hong Kong Arts Festival – Hong Kong’s largest international performing arts festival showcasing opera, music, dance, and theatrical productions from around the world. In Boston, Vanessa interned at VIA Art Fund, a grantmaking organization, and later worked as the Program and Communications Manager at the Pao Arts Center in Chinatown for two years, planning and coordinating exhibitions, event programming, and the annual Experience Chinatown festival.

The arts administration program gives a great structure to understanding the art world and the world of nonprofits. From legal issues to financial management, fundraising to creating education programs, it has given me a good grasp of the challenges and opportunities arts organizations face daily and provided me the skills to learn how to address them.
