Internship: Tanglewood Press Intern

Founded in 1881, the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is one of the premier orchestras in the world. The BSO is committed to bringing world class music and performances to the local and international communities. At Tanglewood, the BSO’s summer home in the Berkshires, we offer a wide variety of BSO, Boston Pops, and chamber performances as well as concerts by popular music artists and an array of educational and humanities programs through the Tanglewood Music Center and the Tanglewood Learning Institute. Starting in late June and running through August, the 2024 Tanglewood season will offer over 150 performances and events in multiple venues on our 155-acre Tanglewood campus straddling Lenox and Stockbridge, drawing over 220,000 visitors each summer. 

   

About the Role 

This is a unique opportunity for a college student or recent graduate interested in PR, marketing, journalism, or arts management to get hands on experience working in a busy press/PR office. The role is full-time, and the schedule will require frequent weekend and evening work to help provide staff coverage when performances are scheduled. 

Compensation is hourly with overtime for work above regular 40 hours a week.  

Please note that housing is not provided, and the intern will need to find their own housing within a reasonable commuting distance of Tanglewood (ideally 30 minutes or less). This is a full-time in-person position.  

 

Job Responsibilities 

You will assist the three-person press and public relations team with a variety of administrative and organizational duties including:  

  • Assembling digital media for press announcements, interviews, meetings, and special events 
  • Researching guest artists and fellows at the Tanglewood Music Center for possible stories 
  • Monitoring media coverage and preparing weekly media recaps 
  • Drafting communications to the press and members of the public 
  • Captioning and organizing concert photography 
  • Labeling and distributing comp tickets for members of the press 
  • Accompanying press during interviews, photo and video shoots, and events 
  • Welcoming visitors to the press office and escorting them on the grounds 
  • Managing office supplies and answering emails and messages  

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Qualifications desired 

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize 
  • Strong written communication skills and command of office technology (Microsoft Office) 
  • Keen attention to detail and follow through 
  • Customer service mindset, friendly and outgoing manner, comfortable interacting with people of all ages and backgrounds 
  • Reliable, punctual, and discreet 
  • Knowledge of classical music strongly desired 

Education 

High school diploma or GED required and some college preferred.
