Performance: Bach and Zelenka
Cantata Singers’ 53rd season opens with J.S. Bach’s intricate Cantata 109, radiant Cantata 147, and the United States premiere of the virtuosic “Laetatus Sum” for soprano and mezzo-soprano by Czech Baroque composer Jan Dismas Zelenka. Bach’s Cantata 109, “Ich glaube, lieber Herr, hilf meinem Unglauben,” examines the inner conflict between doubt and faith with deeply engaging, intricately woven music. The fiery final chorale is set to one of the most famous of Lutheran hymns, “Durch Adams Fall.” The colorful Cantata 147, “Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben,” features what has become some of Bach’s most famous music, now known as “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.”
Scott Allen Jarrett, Director of Music at Marsh Chapel and Music Director of Back Bay Chorale, will give a pre-concert talk, free to all ticketholders, at 7pm in Williams Hall.
Following the performance, all are welcome at a free post-concert reception in Williams Hall.
