BU Archaeology Program Remote Sensing Equipment is available for both extended use in the field and for short-term use for hands-on classroom, lab, and local field instruction.

Equipment requests

Projects wishing to use equipment must submit the equipment request form to the Archaeology Program.

Please note: Requests should be made well in advance of the anticipated period of use to allow enough time for any necessary repairs, upgrades, or part replacements for equipment requested.

Equipment fee

The Archaeology Program assesses equipment fees per instrument per week of use.  The fees help fund upgrades, maintenance, replacement batteries and other parts with a limited use-life to ensure that equipment is up-to-date and operable.

For Classroom or Lab Demonstrations

Equipment is available for the following:

  1. Teaching related hands-on demonstrations in the classroom, lab or in the field where the course professor or teaching fellow wishes to borrow equipment on a short-term basis for instructional purposes only.
  2. Instruction conducted by our faculty, graduate students, teaching fellows as well as qualified individuals in related departments at BU, research associates, and qualified members of local colleges and universities.

Instructional requests must satisfy the conditions outlined below and will be considered on an individual basis by the Archaeology Program Laboratory Committee.

Please Note:  Priority will be given to Archaeology requests should a scheduling conflict arise.

Equipment Use:

  1. Equipment must be hand-carried from the loan point to demonstration site and returned.
  2. The Laboratory Coordinator will check out the instruments with the instructor prior to use and check the equipment back in at completion of instruction.
  3. There is no fee for the use of equipment for classroom, lab or local field instruction, but the faculty member limits its use to that stated on the request form and acknowledges responsibility for its care during the loan period.

For Field Research

Equipment is available for the following:

  1. Field research conducted by our faculty and graduate students. Requests submitted by graduate students must be approved by a faculty sponsor.
  2. Field research conducted by Boston University affiliate. Requests must be approved by the Archaeology Program Lab Committee.

Please note:  Field Research requests need to satisfy all conditions outlined below and will be considered on an individual basis by the Archaeology Program Lab Committee.  In the eventuality of scheduling conflicts BU Archaeology and Anthropology faculty projects, including field schools, will have priority on equipment requests.

Equipment use

  1. It is understood that projects borrowing equipment will use the instrument(s) only for the application outlined in the written Equipment Request Form.
  2. Prior to being lent, the functioning status of the equipment will be checked by Michael Hamilton to make sure all components are present and operable.
  3. Once the physical transfer of the apparatus occurs, the borrower accepts full responsibility for the use, care, and safe return of the equipment in their possession.
  4. Equipment must accompany the borrower or their representative to/from the field rather than being shipped.

Please note: Loss, theft, and/or damage to loaned equipment in use outside the U.S. will be covered under Boston University’s master insurance plan.  However, the borrowing project will be responsible for meeting the $2500 minimum deductible for any insurance claims.

  1. It is the project’s responsibility to determine what security clearances and/or documentation forms are required by customs and immigration officials when equipment is transported to and from foreign countries.
  2. At the completion of the loan period a project representative will meet again with the Michael Hamilton to check-in the equipment, to inventory components, and assess working condition to determine if maintenance is necessary.
